How to Prevent Auto Theft in Car

Did you know that the comprehensive portion of your auto insurance policy covers the theft of your car? Remember though – what the big print giveth, the fine print taketh away. This usually means escape clauses written into a policy that don’t require the company to pay if the auto theft can be blamed, even in part, on the vehicle owner’s negligence.

Assuming that you have spent the few extra dollars to include comprehensive protection and read the policy thoroughly, we will look at other means to stop auto theft.

It may be a few years old, the paint could use a rubbing out and the chrome isn’t all that bright, but it is your car and you don’t want anyone messing with it; let alone stealing it! There are a variety of tools used, to frustrate a thief’s attempts at auto theft, but thieves can be quite inventive and persistent. There are gadgets and measures of a more basic type, from the “Club” to wheel boots.

An automobile is in fact very easy to protect from auto theft, if you know anything about them. A car’s engine needs several things, in order to run: primarily air, fuel, ignition spark and compression. If the engine will not run, it is unlikely that the thief will call a tow truck. He will just move on to easier pickings.

Cutting off the air to an engine is impractical and tough to cover up. There is nothing you can do to affect the compression which is created by internal engine parts. That does leave ignition spark and the fuel. These two are quite enough to stop auto theft, whether you use both or even just one of them.

Whatever method you choose, it must be easily done and not easily observable. Your efforts to protect your car will come to nothing if the thief just undoes it after you leave your car.

Let us first explore the fuel delivery system.

In most vehicles gasoline is moved from the fuel tank (usually in the rear of a car) to the engine, by way of a steel fuel line, that runs the length of the car. A simple valve can be plumbed into this fuel line at any point along its length. If the handle of such a valve were on the inside of the car; let’s say in the driver’s area, hidden by the carpet; the fuel could easily be turned off without anyone noticing.

In a modern fuel-injected automobile, interrupting the flow of gasoline will allow the engine to turn over, but not start; not even a “pop”. Under the carpet is just one location, for a cutoff valve, which can effectively stop auto theft, from inside the trunk or under the hood.

The next method involves cutting off electrical power to the car’s starting or ignition system. A simple, single pole, toggle switch, wired into the low voltage side of the starting or ignition system can prevent auto theft by either not allowing the engine to turn over or if it turns over, not permitting the ignition to be activated. A switch of this type is easily hidden within the driver’s reach, inside of the car’s passenger compartment.

Lastly a quick disconnect can be placed in the engine compartment that isolates the battery from the rest of the system and the engine won’t even turn over. If no other deterrent is put in place and the car must be disabled simply swap the coil to distributor cap lead (mostly on older cars) with any other ignition wire, just the cap ends of both. This will look like normal ignition wiring but your car will not start until the wires are put back in their correct places.

Over 3,000 cars are stolen every day; let’s hope that one or several of these little tricks, used together, every time you leave your car, will keep you from being the victim of auto theft.

A few seconds is all a criminal needs to drive away.

Don’t leave any contents in your vehicle when you leave it parked. Avoid laptops, handbags and even your CD collection and player. If they can be removed place them out of sight. Never leave bags in the vehicle even though they maybe empty. It may look curious and tempting to a thief like they could contain some valuables. While most people remember to remove any portable satnav device they forget about the mounting bracket on the front windscreen. This just confirms to a criminal that you have a satnav and it is probably still somewhere in the vehicle.

Extra armor on vigilante missions

Steal a law enforcement-class vehicle and press R3 to start the vigilante missions. Get to level 12 to increase your maximum armor from 100 to 150.

Easy money

Occasionally as you wander around the city, you will encounter a cop fighting with a gang member (especially in Northpoint Mall). If you step in and hit the gang member, you will receive a Good Citizen’s Bonus when the gang member dies. Once the guy is on the ground, you can continue to kick him and receive the bonus two or three more times (until the body disappears). This is an easy way to get some quick cash, and do some fighting in the process. Also, knock over the parking meters on the sides of the streets to get money. Additionally, purchasing the strip club or the docks will earn you extra money.

Easy money in Little Haiti

Go to the location of the Ryton Aid and the adjacent Pay And Spray. Steal any car and park it directly in front of the Pay And Spray. Enter the Ryton Aid and rob it by pointing a gun at the clerk until you have three stars on your wanted meter. Drop the gun, take the money, and run outside to your car. Drive it into the Pay And Spray. If you got hit by the police, return to the store after your car is repainted and get the health power-up. Run down the block and a new clerk will be back in Ryton Aid. Repeat this process to get easy money.

Easy money in North Point

To get an easy 0 to 0, go to North Point Mall and follow a police officer until he begins chasing someone. Attack that person with your fists (no brass knuckles — you gain more money without them) to get for every punch you throw. Be sure not to hit the police officer. Also, go to the North Point mall at the far end of town (from the hideout). Find The Gap and the CD store. Rob the CD store by aiming at the clerk with auto aim. Wait until you get only one star. When he sets the alarm off you will get another star. Then, run to The Gap and get a change of clothes. The stars will go away. You can rob the CD store clerk again. If he is not there, go downstairs at The Gap and rob that clerk, going back and forth. This saves you a trip to the CD store just to find out that the clerk is on break.

Choose a dirt bike or sport bike and build up a little speed. If you hit the regular and emergency brakes at the same time and stand up (Left Analog-stick Up), you can do a stoppie and earn some money. When in a motorcycle-class vehicle, you can bail while jumping off a ramp by pressing Triangle. This is helpful if you are driving a damaged motorcycle and somehow it sets on fire in the air. This can also used to bail from any out of control vehicle before it lands in water or crashes. This is useful if you know you cannot stop in time. Note: You may take damage from the bail.

Baseball bat

Look in the alleyway directly behind your hideout to find a baseball bat.

Brass knuckles

Look slightly north (less than 100 feet) from the baseball bat behind your hideout to find a set of brass knuckles.

Chainsaw

Enter the apartment building in Ocean Beach next to the Pay & Spray. Find the open door to apartment 30. To your right is a bathroom with blood all over. The chainsaw can be found there.

Cleaver

You can find a cleaver behind the Well Stacked Pizza shop in Washington Beach.

Knife

Go to the alleyway in the south-east corner of the east island (where you start) to find the knife.

Shotgun

You can find a shotgun at any time by going to the top of the Washington Mall via the car park (the circle ramp). When at the top of the building, do down the left side ramp, and then immediately turn around. The gun is to the left of the ramp at the back.
